Id go again and request the same roomI had a lovely art-deco room overlooking Geary street, 4th floor. A live band played music on the street corner on the weekend evenings and they were good, so I could sit on my bed and enjoy live music. If one didnt care for that, request a room toward the back or away from there. The street is lined with art galleries, and good places to eat are abundant. I highly recommend Cafe Mason, at 320 Mason Street, just a block or so away around the corner. My hotel room was lovely, the housekeepers were exemplary. I had to go down a floor for ice, but couldnt remember to tell the hotel staff, so it didnt matter to me. I loved the place.
Travelers tip on diningCafe Mason on 320 Mason Street, is open 24 hours, serves homemade, delicious food at reasonable prices. The blue bus hop-on, hop-off tour was good, Jodies wonderful. Its about 4 miles to walk to GG Park, lovely historic houses and on the way. Macys has a PO, and excellent little restaurants at basement level. I loved the salad place and the taco shop. Britex Fabrics is just two blocks or so down the street.Rating:5
nice place to stay-conveniently locatedclean and convenientRating:4
Great for walkersGreat location! Price is right!Rating:5
Great for priceI had the petite room and it was tiny, but perfect for my needs. The hotel is very close to Union Square and shopping. I would go back in a heartbeat. Staff was friendly and accomodating.Rating:5
Very Pleasant StayI loved the Handlery! Location was great. No need for a rental car if simply touring the city. Public transportation is cheap by comparison and this hotel is right in the center of all of it. The only problem we had is we couldnt get washclothes replaced by housekeeping unless we called. Didnt quite get that but it was the only issue we had. The staff was great. The room was great though a bit small, but hey, we werent running track or anything in it. We would return without a second thought.
Travelers tip on getting the most out of your stayWeekends are nuts in the city! Go during the week if you can. Also a great tip is dont go down to the start of the trolley, go up a block and catch it, virtually no lines.Rating:5
Location, Location, Location! This hotel location could not be any better, the staff was kind and helpful, we totally enjoyed our stay at the handlery.
Travelers tip on getting the most out of your staygo to the cable car turnaround at the end of powell street near the handlery, and purchase a three day pass for 18dollars, you can ride endless cable cars as well as endless bus rides. the cable cars are fun once or twice, however the bus gets you around quickly!Rating:5
Our new go to hotelMy wife and I and two kids loved the hotel. Originally we had booked one nights stay and enjoyed it so much we extended for an additional night. The location was perfect and we were able to use public transit or walk to every thing we wanted to see. In fact, we enjoyed it so much we are now looking into staying at the San Diego Handerly in the near future.Rating:4
Great locationEverything is close to this location, no need to be driving around. The televisions are outdated though, and the pool closes at 8:00pm. But overall the stay was enjoyable.Rating:2
Uncomfortable beds and no A/C.My Fiance and I stayed here for Labor Day weekend. The room was clean but very uncomfortable. We kept waking up in the middle of the night with back aches because of the bed. Also, the rooms A/C wasnt working and kept the room uncomfortably warm. The hotel gave us a fan but never offered to switch rooms. However, the hotel was in the middle of downtown. Shopping, cable cars, and restaurants all within walking distance.
Travelers tipParking is expensive. Be prepared to pay $40 per day. There is a good diner around the corner of the hotel, Loris Diner, that serves great food at a reasonable prices.Rating:5
Very nice European style and great locationOur family really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are small but very comfortable and clean. The TV is small, but while in S.F. we had very little need of watching it. The location is great! Very near shopping, lots of restaurants, galleries, and to public transportation. Great city experience to step outside your hotel and be in the middle of everything. There is a pool located in a nice quiet courtyard, and it was just barely warm enough outside to use it in August. The hotel staff were very helpful and nice. Would recommend it for families or couples.Rating:2
San Francisco is a great city !We loved our stay in San Francisco. The location od the Handerly Hotel was very good. We stayed in the older section onthe hotel and I do not recomend staying in this section. From what I understand is the newer section is better, however we had to upgrade with a cost to change our room.
Travelers tipWhen waiting for a streetcar ,do not wait at the end of the line. They only take 30 passengers and the cars take 60. Instead walk up one block and you will get on without waiting.Rating:5
Will return to this one!Near everything, breakfast, lunch or dinner within 1/2 to 3 blocks with all kinds of different restaurants; very comfortable beds, great room, clean!Rating:4
Nice location and very helpful staffWithin walking distance of Main shopping area and China town and very convenientRating:5
2nd time Ive been there in would go back in a heartbeatFriendly Vewry clean Convenient location to shopping, food, and entertainment Good service
Travelers tip on saving a few bucksIf staying a few days, buy a transportation pass. There are cheap places to eat - ask. Walk to Chinatown - not so hilly.Rating:5
Extremely SatisfiedWe spend four nights at the Handley Union Square and were extremely satisfied. The room was small but very neat and clean. We make the reservation on line at a very good rate. We could have had a larger room but elected not too. As we spent very little time in the room. Everyone we came in contact with was very friendly and helpful. We worked with two of the concierge and both were very very helpful in setting up several trips for us. They did a super job and did not mind how many questions I had for them. When we return to Sanfransco, we will be sure to return to the Handley. Rudy & Jean
Travelers tip on saving a few bucksBe sure to purchase a City pass and same money on using all public transportation.Rating:5
LOCATION WAS PERFECT!!Talk about a great location, i am 20 years old and wanted a romantic getaway, and lets just put it this way... i got one! The service at the hotel was great, always a pleasure to talk to.Rating:4
Top Notch Service, Not Amazing RoomsI booked my stay at Handlery through Expedia. As I was traveling myself, and price was a consideration - I went for a petite room. The location is amazing, just half a block from Union Square, some 3 blocks from China town, 3 blocks from BART station and Market St. The rooms are pretty basic (and petite...) and lack free internet, but they are quite clean and welcoming; The only problem is the noise. The first room was right behind the elevator shaft, which banged continuously, accounting for a bad night. Next day I asked for another room, and they were nice enough to find me a similar, but more quiet room, and did so with a smile. Got to give them credit for that!
Travelers tip on getting the most out of your stayGo to the 6th floor of Macys for a great view and picture of Union Square.Rating:4
Happy TravelerI stayed at the Handlery for 4 nights April 14-17, 2009. The staff was very helpful and friendly and the room was comfortable with everything you would need in a compact space. Only problem was the room had a musty smell since it was in the Historic part of the hotel and the bathroom could have been cleaner.
Travelers tip on shoppingLots of high end shopping in the area but, nothing in the way of tourist shops. Need to go to Fishermans Wharf for that.Rating:4
Excelent locationNice hotel, good serviceRating:5
Great staff!Everyday of my 5 day stay was consistently pleasant. The staff took care of everything that I needed as quickly as possible. Its not fancy but my room was spacious had everything that I needed. The location is great! Right near Union Square, Market Street and the Cable Car turnaround.Rating:5
Reasonable boutique settingThis hotel has character-- the room I was in wasnt your typical hotel setting in terms of decor. It was simple, perhaps a little old fashioned, but had all the essentials. The staff was very good.Rating:5
Quiet, comfortable, and centrally locatedI was assigned a room on the 4th floor overlooking an inner courtyard, which meant that the noise of Union Square was entirely filtered out. This is always a plus for me, as I dont spend enough time in hotels to enjoy a view; I just want a good nights sleep. The hotel staff is courteous and friendly, and food at the Daily Grille is excellent.Rating:3
Pass on thisI got what I paid for. I thought this hotel had great prices but the old saying proved true. The room itself had been smoked in although it was marked as a none smoking room. The walls were partially painted as if a quick fix had been made. I ordered room service for 9:00am. I called the front desk at 9:30 and they were clueless. An incorrect order finally showed up at 9:50. Although I had a 12:00 check out, the maid came to my door twice to see if I was still there.Rating:5
Location, Location, LocationThis hotel was in the best possilbe location. Shopping like no other. Food everywhere was to die for. Easy to get to all areas and close to other transportation. The staff was over the top helpful. Give us great suggestions and help booking tours.
Travelers tip on saving a few bucksTaking a cab was cheaper then the cable car. Do it for fun but its pretty pricy and dosent go to all destinations. The buses are great and cheap.Rating:3
Needs UpgradeThe staff was excellent and the bed had been upgraded but the rest of the room was dated and the TV was a complete joke. It was a tiny old set that discouraged use. No one would pay to watch a movie on that old piece of junk. The location is obviously the best feature. Parking is ridiculous at $38 and then they add tax!
Travelers tip on nightlifeRight across the street from the back entrance is an Irish pub with good music and beer with no cover.
